What you are buying
A key, not an account
HWS Live is a subscription service. You buy a key and paste it into your own HWS install. There is no account on this site to create or sign in to, and no software is delivered — HWS itself is free and you install it yourself.
While a valid key is in place, your install sends periodic aggregate reports and receives back stored history, week-over-week change, comparison with sites of similar size, maintained crawler lists, and a weekly email. What is sent is listed in the privacy page.
Price and payment
$10 a month, or $99 a year
Prices are in US dollars and exclude any tax that applies where you are. Payment is taken through PayPal; we never see or store your card details. Billing recurs until you cancel, monthly or yearly according to the plan you chose.
Your key is emailed as soon as the payment clears. If it does not arrive, write to jot@jotnotes.com and we will send it.
Cancelling
Cancel whenever you like
Cancel from your PayPal subscription or by writing to us. Cancellation stops the next payment; the service runs to the end of the period you have already paid for. Removing the key from your install also stops reports being sent, immediately.
Refunds. If the service does not work for you, tell us within 30 days of a payment and we will refund that payment. Beyond that we refund where the service was not delivered. We would rather refund you than argue.
Your install keeps working after you cancel. HWS is free software and does not stop when a subscription ends; you lose the Live additions, not the product.
What we promise, and what we do not
Honest limits
We will make reasonable efforts to keep the service available and the crawler lists current. We do not promise a particular uptime figure, because we are not going to publish one we have not measured over a meaningful period.
HWS observes and reports. It never blocks or changes traffic, so it is not a security control and must not be relied on as one. Crawler identification uses published IP ranges and behaviour, and something disguising itself well enough can be misread. Readings are generated from fixed rules and, where you enable it, a language model; they are information, not advice, and you should not treat a verdict as fact without looking at it.
We may change the service, the crawler lists and these terms. If a change materially reduces what you are paying for, we will tell you by email before it takes effect, and you may cancel and receive the unused part of the period back.
To the extent the law allows, our liability for any claim relating to HWS Live is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before it arose. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Using it properly
Reasonable use
One key is for one install. Do not resell the service or share a key across organisations. Do not use it to process logs you have no right to process — the data you feed your install is your responsibility, and you are the controller of it.
We may suspend a key that is being used in a way that breaks these terms, or that is being used to attack the service. We will tell you why.
These terms are governed by the law of the seller's place of business. Questions first, always: jot@jotnotes.com.
